“To live is to be musical, starting with the blood dancing in your veins…Do you feel your music?”
Michael Jackson
Prior to the appearance of recorded music late in the 19th century, most people participated in making music in one way or another. Now, however, passive consumption of music, rather than active engagement with it, is the norm. Result: the benefits of music are not being realized by an increasing portion of the public. Chapter 6 is a coda – a musical ending – that invites you to engage actively with music (or to encourage others if you already do so). This is important because the full range of music’s benefits can only be achieved through active engagement. In this concluding section, I present attractive vignettes and practical suggestions to encourage active engagement with music through song, dance, and play(ing an instrument). I also include interviews with people who work in their communities in these domains. In the end, the key is to make your own kind of music.
